Computer Lab Set-up Tips for Your School
Use your wiki page to discuss and brainstorm the set up for your school for each of the areas below. This will be the beginning of a plan for your school site.
Organization
Lab set up: arranged for easy access, each computer uniquely labeled, students assigned to a computer
We added 9 donated g4 towers to create a lab of 39 stations. Each is named and joined to the SFUSD domain. The name is visible on the log on screen. Students log on with user name and password supplied by district.
We have a file server. Each student and teacher has a folder. Students can access a pickup drop off folder and teachers have a shared folder. We have a library media center with 14 older iMacs and a cart with 30 "The Writer" keyboards for word processing and keyboarding skills. Each classroom has at least one computer. All computers are connected to the network except the ones in the annex, where we don't have connection available.
Teachers are required to complete a sign up sheet including the content standards for lab activities. Each class has a seating chart. CTIS keeps a copy on file.
We do have 7 strategic reading classes, a media arts class, journalism & leadership regularly scheduled in the lab. We do, however, still have at least one open slot each week for each period. The reading classes either split a period or use the library media center.
Leadership and Accountability
Who on your school site is accountabile for all aspects of managing the lab? Connie is the CTIS and does most of the work. We have a technology team that meets monthly to establish consensus on tech decisions.
Who are/is the main site contact between your school and the IT department? Connie
Maintenance and Security
What has been done to assure that computers are in a secure location all the time?
Computers are locked to the table with cable locks. Connie's office/workshop where a lot of equipment is stored has a unique key.
What system does everyone routinely use to report hardware or software issues as they arrise?
Call Connie, put a note in her box or catch her in the hall.
Accessibility for All
How can you ensure equity and accessibility to the lab for all classes?
We keep at least one period a week for each of the 7 periods a day open for sign up as needed. Connie and the tech team are monitoring use.
The library media center has 14 computers and a cart with 30 "The Writer" machines. We just started teacher training for using them as supplemental word processors and keyboarding tools.
