Lawton Alternative

Write the name of your school staff present at today's workshop:

  1. Helen Soo Hoo

  2. Julia Fung

  3. David Ellingson

  4. Marvin Lee

The goal of this activity is:

     (1) an opportunity to discuss and share with others how your school manages your computer lab

     (2) Become familiar the skills of using a wiki and possible future uses for this sort of application for the classroom

Discuss these prompts. One person from your group will write a few notes as you discuss the following:

  • How are classes using your school computer lab?

We have a student "mouse squad" oversee by our computer lab technician who set up our lab. The machines are working well. We have been waiting for computer training so that all teachers will have standards for the lab.  But since training came so late, we've done the following: a schedule for class use of the lab has been set up.  Every academic class is scheduled in the lab for one session a week.  With teacher sharing, we can be in the lab for successive days to work on longer term projects.

  • What special tips do you have for managing your lab for other schools? (e.g - Possible tips to share: How does your school assure maintenance and security? Who is responsible for for management? How does your school ensure equity and accessibility to the lab for all classes?)

We have a Computer Technician and CTIS who ar responsible for managing the lab.  Our Technician has been diligent in keeping the lab in good working order.

  • What might be a few concerns or issues about your lab that your school is still working on solutions to solve?

Lawton is currently awaiting approval by the site administrator for schoolwide training on logging in to the SF domain and basic adaptations (i.e. setting the default printer for individual profiles, SFUSD blocks, missing software, et alia). Currently, the site is experiencing basic network problems with faulty terminations and outdated hubs servicing the network connections. We are trying to address replacing the hubs with switches to relieve some of the network load. If we could borrow Brad from IT for a few days, we should be able to pull some cables (re-cabling) to some down stations. Am waiting for our promised projector which we will not be able to mount according to site administrator.
