Computer Lab Set-up Tips for Your School
Use your wiki page to discuss and brainstorm the set up for your school for each of the areas below. This will be the beginning of a plan for your school site.
Organization
Lab set up: arranged for easy access, each computer uniquely labeled, students assigned to a computer, every teacher has a seating chart of the lab and each student is assigned to one computer only for the entire year by class.
Leadership and Accountability
Antonio Mankini is the CTIS for our site and co-team leader for the Tech Terrors.
Micah Melton, our librarian, is the co-team leader for our site.
Antonio Mankini is the conduit between the district and our site, with support from our principal, Mr. Sgarlato.
Maintenance and Security
All the computers in the lab are connected by locking cables in a secured room. They are further protected by password-protected accounts. All on site maintence is handled by Antonio Mankini, with the exception of older imacs for which parts are no longer available. Those teachers who wish to use them handle the maintence for those computers.
What system does everyone routinely use to report hardware or software issues as they arise? A work order for the computer department.
No substitutes are allowed to take students to the lab (except our current site sub).
Accessibility for All
How can you ensure equity and accessibility to the lab for all classes? There is a sign up sheet in the main office, where any teacher can request time in the lab for projects. Teachers also talk with each other and negotiate changes. In leiu of a school server, we opted instead to purchase individual 1GB flash drives for students to use at school and at home. Students are encouraged to bring their own flash drives, but are also allowed to purchase them from the school or check them out from the library.
