Computer Lab Set-up Tips for Your School
Use your wiki page to discuss and brainstorm the set up for your school for each of the areas below. This will be the beginning of a plan for your school site.
Organization
Lab set up: arranged for easy access, each computer uniquely labeled, students assigned to a computer
Ideally students should stay with a computer, although in some classes this isn't possible. Also ideally, every student would have
their own student Org Unit login and password. I asked for more logins 2 1/2 years ago, and again at intervals, but they will not
give me any more.
Leadership and Accountability
Who on your school site is accountabile for all aspects of managing the lab?
Richard Foldenauer
Who are/is the main site contact between your school and the IT department?
Liz Okazaki
Maintenance and Security
What has been done to assure that computers are in a secure location all the time?
The Lab is locked.
What system does everyone routinely use to report hardware or software issues as they arrise?
They tell Richard Foldenauer.
Maintenance II:
Imaging computers is by far the most time consuming maintenance activity. When working with district IT, it is very important
two get two or more sets of working image disks, and two image boot disks. These should be tested to be sure they work. Even with
disks that work (and they often do not) it frequently happens that the computer will die in mid-image. I noticed that the district is not using Altiris for the
new lab computers, instead using Norton. It would be a huge benefit if we could push software onto all the systems from the server by using a console.
Accessibility for All
How can you ensure equity and accessibility to the lab for all classes?
All staff need to be trained.
The lab needs to be adequately staffed and maintained.
WE could hold some more staff development days, or lab days so they would be more comfortable using the computers.
Right now, at least one lab is available every period, but since our lab manager is .8, he is not their every period to support teachers.

Bravo for taking on Digital Story Telling! It's so much work for both teachers and students, yet I'm sure it's really rewarding in the end for all involved parties.

I like the idea of the digital story telling. I can only imagine how long it takes to prepare. What a great way to use technology in the classroom.

WOW!! Your presentation on Digital Storytelling was inspirational. I can't wait to try a portion of this project next year with my students.

I enjoyed hearing about how you could cut and paste portions of videos from you tube and other blocked sites into a presentation. I have found that the internet at school has limited access to almost everything, and I have been searching a way around it. Thanks for the tips. I found it useful to know that you can edit movies that you find on-line. Often for Ell classes I only want a short portion of something because the rest is too complex.

I love the concept of digital storytelling and would be interested in introducing it at my school, but I would have to learn the technology first.
